Check for these things while shopping for a router
1. Internet Speed and Usage:
What is your internet plan's speed? Most routers advertise their maximum speeds, but you'll only see those speeds if your internet plan supports them. Check your plan's details to see what speeds you're paying for.
How many devices will you be connecting? If you have a lot of devices streaming video, gaming, or downloading files, you'll need a router that can handle the traffic.
2. Wi-Fi Standards:
Newer Wi-Fi standards offer faster speeds and better range. Look for routers that support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac).
3. Range and Coverage:
Consider the size of your home and the layout of walls and other obstacles. If you have a large home or thick walls, you may need a router with a stronger signal or a mesh Wi-Fi system.
Think about where you'll be using Wi-Fi the most. If you have a dedicated home office or gaming room, you may want to consider placing the router there or using a range extender.
4. Security Features:
Look for a router with WPA3 encryption, which is the latest and most secure Wi-Fi security standard.
Some routers also offer features like guest Wi-Fi networks and parental controls.
5. Other Features:
Some routers have additional features like USB ports for connecting storage devices or printers.
Gaming routers may have features like Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize gaming traffic.
6. Budget:
Routers range in price from around $50 to $300 or more. Decide how much you're willing to spend before you start shopping.
