High in the mountains of Sialum, Morobe Province, lies one of Papua New Guinea’s greatest mysteries — Bombongara. From above, it looks like massive terraces carved into the mountainside. But local legend tells another story: a giant snake spirit so powerful that its body shaped the land itself.
Archaeologists have uncovered stone tools over 38,000 years old, making Bombongara one of the oldest human settlement sites in the Pacific. Even stranger, seashells and fish fossils have been found high in the mountains. For science, this is geology. For the people of Sialum, it’s proof of the snake’s power.
