Bastø Fosen is a ferry company that has operated the Moss–Horten ferry route (Bastøferga) since 1996.
The company is owned by Torghatten ASA.
The company has six ferries: MF "Bastø I", MF "Bastø II", MF "Bastø IV", MF "Bastø V", MF "Bastø VI" and MF "Bastø Electric".
In 2018, the company transported over 1.8 million vehicles and 3.7 million passengers. The Moss–Horten ferry route is, together with the Breistein-Valestrand ferry route in Vestland, the only domestic ferry routes that are not subsidized by the public sector; the route is also Norway's largest.
Highway 19 uses this ferry.
In 1996, the company Bastø Fosen AS took over the concession for the route from Bjørn Bettum's company Gokstad. During a transitional period, two older vessels were used until the newly built MF "Bastø I" and "Bastø II" were delivered in 1997 from Fosen mechanical workshop. The two purchased vessels, MS "Einar Tambarskjelve" and MS "Holger Stjern", were poorly suited for the route, in poor technical condition and the users protested, sometimes violently.
When the two new shuttle ferries came into service, there was once again a good ferry service. Traffic continued to increase, from about 600,000 vehicles in 1996 to 1,400,000 vehicles in 2004 and in 2001 the MF "Sogn" was hired as a third additional vessel. In 2003, the company applied for a new license and was granted it until 2015, which laid the foundation for contracting the MF "Bastø III", delivered from Poland in February 2005.
On December 8, 2014, it was announced that the tender competition for Norway's largest ferry contract for the period 2017–2026 had been won by Bastø-Fosen. There will be five ferries on the route plus a reserve ferry. Three of the five will be built new. Cars will be ticketed with AutoPASS from 2017, while pedestrians, cyclists and car passengers travel free of charge. The AutoPASS scheme is operated by Skyttel AS.
Bastø Fosen's electric car ferry, MF "Bastø Electric", was put into regular scheduled service between Moss and Horten in March 2021, at the time the world's largest electric ferry.
