In late spring 2023, I embarked on a scenic drive from Ulrichen (Obergoms) in the Swiss Alps to Chamonix, France, passing through the Rhone Valley and Trient. Starting in Ulrichen, I followed Route 19, a well-maintained road that winds through the Goms Valley, known for its traditional Swiss villages and wooden chalets. The journey took me alongside the Rhone River, which flows through the valley, with the snow-capped peaks of the Alps providing a stunning backdrop.
Continuing westward, I passed through the town of Brig, a key junction where the valley widens. Here, I joined the Route 9 (E62), which led me further down the Rhone Valley. The road was smooth and easy to navigate, with the valley gradually opening up, revealing vineyards on the slopes and small towns dotting the landscape.
As I approached Martigny, a historic town known for its Roman ruins, I turned onto the Route 21 (E27) towards Trient. This part of the drive was more winding, with the road climbing steadily through the Trient Valley. The route offered views of the forested slopes and the fast-flowing Trient River below.
Crossing the border into France, I continued on Route D1506, which led me down into the Chamonix Valley. The drive ended in Chamonix, a famous mountain town nestled at the foot of Mont Blanc. The late spring weather made the drive pleasant, with the roads clear and the mountain scenery vibrant.
