Stargazy Pie | Cornish Fish Pie | British Pie Week

Stargazy pie is a fish pie from Cornwall. Stargazy pie has fish heads poking through the pastry lid, gazing at the stars. Stargazy pie was created in the village of Mousehole (pronounce Maow-zell) near Penzance in Cornwall. The story goes that in the 16th century during one exceptionally stormy winter the villagers were starving because they could not get their boats out to catch fish. They were saved when one of the fishermen, Tom Bawcock, managed to set sail and came back with a load of fish. The catch was baked into a huge pie and all the villagers shared it. This was the stargazy pie and the fish heads were left poking out to prove that there really were fish in there. The Ship Inn in Mousehole maintains the stargazy pie tradition by baking it every 23rd December - Tom Bawcock's Eve. So if you want to create a spectacularly weird but tasty pie, this is how you do it.
