The job of EOS the Goddess of Dawn in Greek Mythology was to "bring light and banish darkness". This makes it the perfect name for a camera that did just that in many ways. It was the dawn of a new era for Canon as well as the photography industry. For Canon, EOS also stands for Electro Optical System.
Canon took a huge risk. New levels of automation and reliance on electronics and a new set of lenses using the electronic EF lens mount which were not backward compatible.
This is the camera range that gave Nikon a real freight and considerably raised the bars for Canon and all of its competitors who needed to catch up.
EOS-1 was introduced in 1989 and was introdued this way:
“With the distinction of being Canon’s top of the line AF SLR, the EOS-1 represents the sum total of considerable efforts to design a camera that meets the requirements of the most demanding professional photographers. These people know exactly what their needs are and will appreciate the detail and design considerations that have been incorporated in the EOS-1.
There are 3 main points of design:
• Allow the photographer complete concentration on picture composition
• Support photographer’s freedom of choice by allowing complete control of basic camera functions
• Provide the necessary performance for todays expanded shooting opportunities
Canon wanted the most responsive Autofocus system, a more comprehensive metering system, predictive focusing of moving objects and enhanced reliability to handle difficult shooting conditions.
Custom function control provided the freedom to set certain functions to suit the individual preferences.”
EOS-1 initially came with a small range of EF or Electro Focus lenses, Speedlites (flash units) and professional accessories such as Power Drive Booster, Command Back and more. The EF lenses grew considerably over time and now almost anything you want is available.
Despite the name, EOS-1, it was not the first EOS. The first one was EOS-650 in 1987.
EOS-1 was the successor to Canon’s highly regarded F-1 and later New F-1 and based on the design of Canon T90, designed by Luigi Colani. Its main competitor at the time of launch was Nikon F-4 . EOS-1 arguably shortened the life of Nikon F4, leading to Nikon F5 which has more than a little resemblance to EOS-1.
But this does not imply straight copying. It is more likely the result of both of them being influenced by other rapid innovations in the Japanese Camera industry and earlier trial and error experience using enthusiast and semi-pro models.
As a background to this video, I recommend that you also watch the entire Nikon F professional camera series followed by Canon F-1, Canon A-1 and Canon AE-1.
If you find even the smallest factual inaccuracy, please take the time and point it out in the comments. Corrections will be made as I am not completely faultless and sometimes information can be contradictory.
As a bit of fun, if you can correctly identify all the 3 locations used for film tests in the comments section, I will send you a high resolution copy of the TechHeritage Grand Camera Chronology for your viewing pleasure.
