Rough mechanicals refer to the installation of the foundational systems for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical wiring in a new home or during a renovation. This process happens after the framing is complete but before the interior finish work, like drywall, is started.
Key Elements of Rough Mechanicals:
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning):
.
This includes installing the ductwork, furnace, air conditioner, and other components necessary for temperature and air quality control.
Plumbing:
.
Rough plumbing involves installing pipes for water supply (both hot and cold), drain lines, and gas lines.
Electrical:
.
This phase includes running electrical wiring throughout the house, including outlets, switches, and the main electrical panel.
Other Considerations:
Timing:
Rough mechanicals occur after exterior sheathing and roofing are installed, but before insulation and drywall.
Purpose:
The goal is to get the essential systems in place before covering them with drywall and other finish materials.
Inspections:
Municipal and mechanical inspections are often required during the rough-in phase.
Other Work:
Additional tasks like siding, masonry, and insulation may also occur during this stage.
