The ruins of Empel Castle are located on Lake Empel in Germany. This castle dates from the beginning of the 13th century.
At the end of the Second World War, at the time of the liberation, the Germans used the castle to barricade the road from the Allies towards Bocholt, which leads to the Netherlands.
Many castles were taken by the Germans during the war as observation towers, as shelters for troops and officers or as storage rooms for weapons and ammunition.
Castles were also deliberately destroyed to prevent them from being used by enemy troops.
Almost half of the total damage to castles and country estates occurred in the Netherlands and Germany during the last year of the war.
This castle was also completely destroyed during the last months of the war.
