The Airlie Estates are situated in the Angus Glens and cover a wide variety of landscape from moorland to arable farm land. The Estate has been in the Ogilvy family for at least 700 years.. The family home, Cortachy Castle, which dates back from the 16th century, lies at the heart of the Estate. The walk to the Airlie Monument leads to good views over the Angus hills and mountains. Cortachy Castle grounds also provide a variety of paths.
The monument was built in 1901 on Tulloch Hill near Kirriemuir in honour of David Ogilvy, the 9th Earl of Airlie (1856 – 1900) who was killed in South Africa at the Battle of Diamond Hill during the Boer War. It is based on a tower from the Earl’s home, Airlie Castle.
