The ancient Olympics were the most important religious event on the Ancient calendar. Dated to 776 BCE, the games were held every four years. The festival was dedicated to both Olympian Zeus and to the mortal Pelops. It was the modulation between the worship of both of these figures which placed the ancient stadion race at the center of the religious significance of the event. Here we will take a look at all four days of the ancient games, including the preliminary and concluding events, with an eye to their cultural and religious significance. A day in the life of a competitor at Olympia was one of the most important days for any individual in the ancient world.
