Political outrage erupted across Punjab after the Union Government issued a notification on October 28, dissolving the 59-year-old Senate and Syndicate of Panjab University, with the order coming into effect from November 5. The decision to replace the university’s elected bodies with nominated ones has drawn widespread condemnation from the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), who accused the Centre of “dismantling democracy” and “saffronising” one of India’s oldest educational institutions.
