I ordered a bunch of acrylic paint from Jackson's Art Supplies and I decided to do an unboxing video! I ordered a Liquitex Basics starter box, a bunch of Pebeo Studio acrylics, and slipped in a Golden paint chart to round things off
Liquitex credits itself as the inventor of the first water-based acrylic paint in 1955 - before this they had to be worked with solvents like more classic oil paints. We can also thank the creator, Henry Levison, with inventing a machine to test paint for lightfastness (which, if you care about original artwork retaining their intended colours, was a massive boon).
Pebeo meanwhile started in 1919 as a company that turned lead into pigment derivatives, which were then processed and some - which was made into powder - was subsequently used in paint. They gradually extended to offering ready-to-use paints in an oil medium. In the 1940s Pebeo expanded into watercolours, creating watercolour 'blocks' and offering a more economical option during the war. It wasn't until 1977 that Pebeo offered its first acrylic paints, but with over half a century of history and brand recognition that wasn't an issue.
Golden is another brand that started as a company offering oil paints as Bocour Artist Colors - they wouldn't gain the name 'Golden Artist Colours' until 1980 when Sam Golden attempted to retire, only to grow bored and restart a paint making business. in 2014 Golden launched QoR, a range of watercolours that you may have heard some artists talking about.
