Percy Grainger plays six pieces from The Nutcracker

In late 1924, Aeolian issued two Duo Art reproducing piano rolls of Percy Grainger's arrangement and performance of six selections from The Nutcracker ballet by Tchaikovsky. These two rolls were marketed as a set with a previously issued 1917 Grainger Duo-Art recording of his "The Waltz of the Flowers" concert paraphrase. This video shows them on a 1920 Steinway model XR Duo Art grand, recently restored at Historic pianos. The two 1924 roll recordings are Duo Art # 6798, (1. March, 2. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, 3. Russian Dance "Trepak"), and Duo Art # 6810, (4. Arabian Dance (Coffee), 5. Chinese Dance (Tea), and 6. Dance of the Reed Flutes.) Grainger captured a colorful and varied performance from a time years before the invention of modern electronic recording techniques.
