Higashi Hongan-ji, officially known as Shinshū Honbyō, is the head temple of the Ōtani branch of Jōdo Shinshū (True Pure Land Buddhism) and one of the most powerful religious institutions in Japanese history.
Repeatedly destroyed by fires and rebuilt again and again, the temple stands today as one of the largest wooden religious structures in the world.
In this video, I explore:
• The origins and teachings of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism• Why Higashi and Nishi Hongan-ji were intentionally separated• The political role of Buddhist institutions during the Sengoku and early Edo periods• The architectural scale of the Goeidō (Founder’s Hall)• The underground intervention by architect Shin Takamatsu• The remarkable story of the Kaya-tsuna ropes, braided from hemp and donated hair• And the spiritual heart of the temple — the Amida Hall
Filmed on location in Kyoto, this video presents Higashi Hongan-ji as a living intersection of belief, architecture, and political history.
