When targeting permit, you’d be crazy not to have a few different crabs in your fly box. We recently heard about an angler in the Virgin Islands seeing permit going absolutely crazy on sea urchins, so I wanted to test out a new concept: a purple crab, which could imitate the urchins, but could also be presented as a crab. Since we’re headed to Puerto Rico, which is very close to the Virgin Islands, I thought it’d be worth a try. I’ve adapted Doug McKnight’s danger muffin to be a bit more, “urchiny,” if you will, and I’ve got a feeling it may produce the results we’re hoping for.
