Speed Challenge - Back in Business - Fanatic Falcon 89, NeilPryde EVOX 5.2, Select Elite Hotrod 27

Speedsurfing session at Akersten Street, Nelson, NZ

This was my personal Speed Challenge 8 months after a major injury, which I got at exactly the same spot. The Northerly wind was quite strong above 30 knots and very up and down.

Before the session, I wasn’t quite sure wether I would be up to that challenge yet. But my mates who you can see in the background were encouraging me, thank you all!

Today I was able improve the trim, which has always been my weak point. I will move away from the modified wave boom, which doesn’t work for me with a race sail in these conditions. That will be the subject of a future video.

Although my speed runs were on moderate broad reach only I came quite close to my personal best from two years ago, which is encouraging. The chop was simply too much for me to perform nice slingshots at this point. There is a good chance that I can further improve my speed when fully committed (my personal best is here:    • Need more Speed? My Personal Best at 100m,...  ).

Finally, I have managed my fastest gybe yet: 29.6 km/h outgoing, measured by my Polar watch. That is a huge achievement for me after all this time getting back into shape. I would love to make a gybe with a speed consistently above 30km/h. That is my next goal.

In summary today’s session was a big success, I am very happy about it.
