牧⽺姑娘
Arranged by Nelson Kwei
The Vocal Consort Presents: There Will Come Soft Rains
Conducted by: Mr Foong Hak Luen
牧⽺姑娘 sings of a young shepherdess guiding her flock of sheep in andout of the fold on a bright, sunny day.
As night falls, she brings her flock back in while she continues her song.
The poetry likens the music of the 草笛 (the music of the pastoral) to be of many romantic admirers looking for a chance to make advances on her.
By laying them not on her heart, it also playfully alludes to how she remains indifferent to her potential suitors.
This folk tune hails from Korea, with anonymous origins.
Our conductor, Mr Nelson Kwei arranged this melodious narration for a choral setting in 2000 for a CD recording for the Victoria Junior College Choir.
The lush green grass shines and glistens
The gentle stream reflects the rays of the sun
The young shepherdess hurries out her flock
The music of the pastorals brushes by her ears
Dusk falls and she hurries her flock back
The stars twinkle and the wind blows in dream
The young shepherdess joyfully sings her song
The music from the pastorals lays not on her heart
