Yesterday I went to Byron Bay, New South Wales - to do the Byron Bay Solar Train among a few other attractions for the first time since 2018. This train is the first solar powered train in the world, and it goes along a three kilometre stretch of track from North Beach (near the luxury Element Byron Bay resort) to Byron Beach (which is just shy north of the original Byron Bay Railway Station which served passengers from 1894 to 2004). The solar train is two railcars (a 660-class leading car which runs on solar power and a 720-class trailer car). Both carriages formerly operated on country services in New South Wales until the 1990s (for 661) and 2007 (for 726) and are now operating tourist trains in Byron Bay.
