Cleaning of sewing tech is necessary, a bit dusty, but can also be very rewarding. I use Juki mo654DE overlocker (serger) to demonstrate brushing, vacuuming and oiling.
Cleaning is an essential part of the maintenance process, and you should never oil a dirty machine as this will do more harm than good.
Overlock machines create a lot of lint with every stitch, and that's fine. Just clean them once a month, or after big projects, or when you open the lid and can't let it all sit there, then oil, and you and your machine will be best friends for years :)
