How to care for Musa bananas in spring

Growing Musa basjoo bananas in the UK is very rewarding. These bananas are one of the hardiest banana plant species that we can grow. When the warms in spring and our Musa basjoo bananas begin to grow, it is time to get some gardening jobs done to help them grow as healthy as possible. Musa basjoo stems are made up of multiple old leaves and are actually a pseudostem. In order to encourage healthy growth in spring, we are going to cut pseudostem back to a clean growing point to enable fresh banana leaves to emerge throughout the growing season. This same technique can be used for many bananas species that are growing outdoors in cooler climates, including Musa sikkimensis.
