Cherry Blossoms and fresh tracks. April in Hakuba Japan

Spring time conditions and cherry blossoms. We even had some fresh snow this week in Hakuba. I won’t call it powder but let’s just say fresh tracks were laid. Probably around 15 cms fell but it was windy and you could certainly find some fun turns and I’ll take that any day. That’s late snow for Japan. Probably the latest that I have experienced on resort.

At this time of year though it is all about the sakura or cherry blossoms. It is really difficult to describe how majestic it is when they all start blooming. You can only get caught up in the Japanese celebratory aspect to it. The change of season. The time just before you start your crops on the farm. Tradition has long been about sitting under a sakura tree with a bento box and a bottle of sake which is known as hanami. During normal times the parks would be full of blue tarps on the ground, endless boxes of food and a bottomless cups of nihonshu. A lie down under a sakura with the blossoms floating down around you is a right of passage here. I’ll probably do that tomorrow.
Let’s finish up with one of my fav restaurants. Tomatito in Echoland is a great spot for dinner or just a cheeky beer at the bar. Pizzas are pretty good but i’ll always go for the rice balls and the spring rolls. It’s a share plate type of menu. Check it out next time you are in Hakuba.
