Finding and Photographing Northern Harriers as Sunset

I headed out to the grasslands on a mild day, hoping the weather might offer a good opportunity to find Northern Harriers. It didn’t take long before I spotted a pair working the fields, and I moved into position to observe and photograph them as the light continued to improve.

Northern Harriers are a unique grassland raptor, known for their low, coursing flight and reliance on open habitat. Finding the right conditions and light can make all the difference when photographing them.

In this video, I share the process of finding Northern Harriers in open grassland habitat, reading their behavior, and positioning myself as the sun dropped toward the horizon. As the evening unfolded, I was able to capture both photos and video clips, with my best opportunity coming right as the sun set over the grasslands.

This kind of quiet, patient wildlife photography—letting the habitat, light, and behavior come together—is one of the reasons I love photographing grassland species.
