Can a child with a disability save this whole village? Can a child who can’t walk become a wheelchair warrior and a hero? This book, based on a true story from Africa shows you that it is possible. You’ll love learning about this book that is perfect for any home or school library and is wonderful for special education class or a class where students use wheelchairs or assistive devices for mobility.
It’s also perfect for summer reading and for use during July - Disability Pride Month.
Here are my take-aways from this book, for any teachers looking to tie this book into a larger theme:
1) Anyone can be a hero.
2) Everyone can make a difference in their community and create change for good.
3) Don’t judge a book by it’s cover or a person based on their ability/disability.
4) We can all be helpers! And sometimes our friends classmates and community can help us, too.
5) Drums are awesomely cool!
Want to add a fun activity to this book lesson? Here are two freebie coloring pages about drums from Africa that could be used to call for help.
