This is a complete flip-through of the ST25 publication, a 250-page editorial book documenting the 2025 RMIT Graphic Design study tour to Japan (May 7-20, 2025).
Eighteen graphic design students and two instructors traveled through Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, working directly with Japanese master practitioners in letterpress, risograph, screen printing, and wood carving. The tour focused on hands-on making in authentic studio environments – learning through doing rather than observing.
This publication was designed, written, and produced entirely by the students themselves. Every page documents our workshops at Letter Boy, Albatro Print and Plant, Meiko Letterpress, Echos Letterpress, Mano Works, Studio Press Club Kyoto, and JAM Osaka. You'll see student reflections, process photography, printed outcomes, and insights into what we're calling "the third language" – that universal communication that emerges in maker spaces, transcending verbal barriers.
The book features die-cut dust jackets, vacuum-formed logo motifs, and hand-sewn binding. It's a testament to both Japanese print culture and what our students learned about material engagement and craft excellence during those two weeks.
