Wangduechhoeling Palace, built in 1857 as a private residence for the legendary Bhutanese warrior Trongsa Penlop Jigme Namgyel, is situated along the Chamkhar River in central Bhutan, surrounded by the lush fields of the Jakar valley.
The palace was the birthplace of Bhutan’s first king, Ugyen Wangchuck, and served as the seat of national power in the early 20th century. Despite its neglect in the following decades, the palace remains a quintessential example of 19th-century Bhutanese architecture, featuring white stone walls, wattle-and-daub partitions, and richly ornamented timber details. It houses priceless murals, texts, sculptures, and textiles.
Her Majesty the Queen Mother Gyalyum Tshering Pem
Wangchuck launched the restoration of the Wangduechhoeing Palace in 2015 dedicated to the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck’s 60th birth anniversary.
After the restoration of Wangduechhoeling Palace is complete it will be converted into a museum about Bhutanese culture and history. Today the Palace is under the patronage of most beloved Gyaltsuen, the Queen of Bhutan.
The conservation aims to preserve the palace as a cultural landmark while promoting sustainable tourism and economic opportunities for the region.
The official opening of the palace yet to be announced but the good news is the palace has already become hotspot for tourists, students and Bhutanese traveller travelers.
