What to do in France?
The Fortress of Polignac stands on a volcanic rock, 5km north-west of Le Puy-en-Velay, surrounded by steep cliffs. The Fortress has a unique look, and it stands on the basalt rock in the perfect defensive position. The rock emerged from the lake 3 million years ago and the climate then made it easy for the lords to carve on the stone that's made of volcanic breccia.

History
For nearly 1000 years the Fortress has belonged to the same family, who influenced not only the destiny of Velay but also the history of France. By the 14th century, the lords of Polignac became the most prominent barons in the institution. During the Hundred Year War, the Fortress took on whole new importance in defence of the region.

Apollo legend
This carved head, the "Well of the Abyss" and the "Well of the Oracle" are associated with an old legend. The Polignac rock is said to have been a place of worship dedicated to Apollo, the god of oracles, able to predict the future. 
The priests of Apollo, after welcoming the pilgrims at the foot of the rock and made some enquiries sent them off up the rock. Then the priests entered the bottom of the well of the abyss by a hidden passage and informed their accomplices on the top of the rock of the questions they learnt from the pilgrims. 
Then the priests climbed down to the underground chamber where they prepared the answers to the questions for the oracle and lit a fire to boil water so that the steam from it would fill the temple with a mysterious mist. When the pilgrims arrived at the temple after their long climb, the priests began to recite their predictions as if the voice was coming from the mouth of the oracle giving the pilgrims the answers to the questions they had not yet asked.
