Welcome to “Once Upon a Lao Tale”, created to preserve and promote Lao literature.
Today, we will delve into the story of “Khun Lou, Nang Oua”, a work of classical literature that depicts the love between two young people who must face multiple obstacles to their true love.
A work that also reflects part of the socio-political environment, thoughts and ideas of its time.
This literary work belongs to the poetic genre that developed during the flourishing period of the Kingdom of a Million Elephants (Lan Xang) in the 16th and 17th centuries.
This story was extracted from manuscripts on palm leaves, inscribed in ancient Tham and Lao script. Originally written as a verse poem, it was later rewritten in prose.
There are several copies and versions of this love story between Khun Lou and Nang Oua, including those passed down orally from generation to generation, in accordance with the oral tradition, which was the primary means of transmitting knowledge and stories at the time.
Our summary draws inspiration from several versions of the story, including the one rewritten in prose by Outhine Bounyavong, a Laotian journalist and writer, based on the palm leaf manuscript from the Hua Xieng Temple in Luang Prabang. We also consulted the prose rewritten by Khampho Phouangsaba, a Laotian journalist, writer and poet, based on the palm leaf manuscript, preserved at the National Library of Laos. Both were accomplished authors with numerous publications, leaving us a valuable literary treasure.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our deep respect and extend our sincere thanks to the poets, philosophers, and writers of all generations who have dedicated their time to the preservation and transmission of this intellectual heritage.
We also consulted literature textbooks and history books to gain deeper insight into the cultural and socio-political context and to better understand the stakes of this love story between a prince and a princess, at a time when peace and stability depended in part on a system of matrimonial alliances among the different kingdoms.
