It's time for another timetable change, and that also means saying goodbye to many connections. On December 12th and 13th, 2025, the SBB Eurocity trains from Zurich and Basel traveled to Germany via the left side of the Rhine for the last time. These were EC 6 and 9 to Dortmund Hbf and EC 7 and 8 to Hamburg-Altona. Now, not only are these connections ending, but also the use of these trains in Germany. They have been in service on SBB's Eurocity routes since the 1980s, and in recent years in Germany, they were pulled by the BR 101 locomotives, which are now also being phased out of long-distance services.
On December 12th happened the farewell journey of the EC 8, from Zurich HB to Hamburg-Altona, with the historic train name "Rheingold," the BR 101 locomotive in European livery, and three panorama cars. I was lucky enough to be on board for the final leg between Bremen Hbf and Hamburg-Altona. Despite a 1.5-hour delay and the fact that the train was very crowded, it was definitely enjoyable. Now, new trains are running between Hamburg and Zurich. Starting December 14th, SBB will connect the two cities with Giruno high-speed trains as ECE services via Frankfurt, Fulda, and Hanover, instead of Koblenz, Dortmund, and Bremen.
