These buckets must be filled in the right order:

Knowledge – what you know

Skills – what you can do

Network – who you know

Resources – what you have

Reputation – what the world thinks of you

Most people try to start with reputation or resources, but skipping the first two buckets is like building a house on sand.

I also talk about “professional earthquakes”—sudden events like job loss, industry disruption, or business failure—and why knowledge and skills are the only things that can never be taken away from you.
