Does Ultimate Lightning McQueen Work Without the App

I was chatting to a viewer last week about the app for Sphero's Ultimate Lightning McQueen and how you can't find it in the app store anymore. However, if you have previously downloaded it, you can download it again which means it's still online. Lightning doesn't do much without it sadly. To get him to power on without the app, plug his charger in. Then the only thing he really does is make a cute emotive desk companion but that's about it.
