Located in the county of Leicestershire, and around eight miles southwest of Leicester, is the town of Earl Shilton.
The town's name is derived from Old English for 'farm on a shelved terrain'. The 'Earl' component refers to Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, who spent a significant amount of time hunting in Shilton Wood whilst taking residence in Earl Shilton Castle. The castle dates from the 12th century, with a short-lived history as a fortification, having been converted to a hunting lodge by the 13th century.
Situated northeast of the town centre, and just next to the ruins of Earl Shilton Castle, is the Parish Church of St Simon and St Jude. This dates from the 1850s as a rebuilding of its predecessor, although it retains an original 15th century tower.
From the 18th century Earl Shilton experienced major growth owing to the hosiery and shoemaking industries. These peaked during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, but ultimately declined in the post-war era in the face of competition from overseas.
In 1863 a railway station opened in the neighbouring village of Elmesthorpe situated about a mile south of Earl Shilton. This was a stop on the Birmingham–Peterborough Line up until its closure in 1968 due to the Beeching Cuts. Public transport to Earl Shilton consists of direct buses to and from Leicester, Hinckley, Nuneaton, Coventry and various other nearby locations.
