Friday Night Funkin' was made in October of 2020 by Ninjamuffin, Phantom Arcade, Kawai Sprite, and Evilsk8r. The FNF community exploded in popularity in 2021 with huge mods such as Sonic Exe, Tricky, Pibby, and Indie Cross. During this time, Week 7 released with the Newgrounds mascot, Tankman, with Week 8 on the near-horizon. Week 8 is speculated to include characters from Pico's School, such as Darnell and Nene. FNF has other camoes, such as Skid and Pump, or the Spooky Kids, from Sr Pelo's animation series on YouTube called Spooky Month.

The game hold original characters such as Boyfriend, Girlfriend, Lemon Demon, or Monster, and more. Popular gaming channels have covered Friday Night Funkin', including Coryxkenshin, Communitygame, and Game Theory. The game is known for other high profile mods such as Hotline 024, Vs Imposter, Mario Madness, and Hypno's Lullaby made by iconic creators such as Banbuds and Clowfoe. Other FNF characters include Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest, alongside Senpai from the Week 6 update. The community has been through many eras, some golden, and some filled with drama. However, the community still holds strong over 2 years after FNF's initial release.
