The novel is divided into three distinct parts, where parts one and two are told in the first-person narrative by the author, Yann Martel, who is retelling the tale that he heard from the now-adult Pi Patel. The third part is a transcript between Pi Patel and two police officers. The novel ends with Yann Martel’s commentary in the first-person voice. The setting of novel starts with Pi’s childhood home in Pondicherry, India; shifting to the Pacific Ocean; Tomatlán, Mexico; and, fleetingly, Toronto, Canada, while Pi was stranded at sea for 227 days, beginning on 2nd July 1977.
