1979 Gould Twin Dixie 125 - The final race weekend for CART before the teams and drivers descended upon Indianapolis for the Month of May was in Atlanta for two races, both won by Johnny Rutherford. The IRL-CART Split well documented and chronicled by historians, but a lot less information is known about the USAC-CART split after 1978. In the pre-race broadcast, this feud is discussed with team owner Roger Penske, who was one of the original founding members of CART. CART teams were threatened to be excluded from the 1979 Indianapolis 500, but common sense would prevail and the teams were allowed to enter, with Penske's Rick Mears winning the race
