When I analyzed the lore surrounding the Witness one theme kept showing up: trauma. The more I looked into it, more pieces fell into place. I interpret the Witness as a metaphor for complex trauma and dissociation. The purpose of this video is not to excuse the Witness’ actions but understand where they come from and the broader trauma symptoms that inform these actions, while also explaining steps it could take to cope in a healthy way. I believe art can help us understand difficult truths about reality even if it is not intentionally constructed that way and even if it is an imperfect reflection of the truth. Today, I want to explore the witness’ connection to trauma and explain why I think it as a character is a decent metaphorical depiction of complex trauma and dissociation. I have done a deep dive on the philosophy and psychology of the character that might be helpful to understand for this more technical and narrow analysis. It will be linked in the description. Since I realized this, the gears started turning in my head, and the metaphor has only grown deeper and more complex.
