Penniless and working for Halls Engineering in Dartford, the great Cornish pioneer was lodging at the Bull hotel in the town centre for about a year when he was taken ill with pneumonia.
After a week's bed rest, he died on the morning of the 22nd of April 1833 aged just 62.
His fellow workers organised a collection and paid for a paupers funeral at the nearby St Edmunds burial ground, they carried him there from the hotel and he was laid to rest in an unmarked grave.
