In 1978, America was introduced to competitive cheerleading through the first broadcast of CBS' National Collegiate Cheerleading Championships.
Held at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, CA, the University of Florida Cheerleaders competed in this inaugural event and secured a fourth-place finish, earning the first scholarships for UF cheerleaders.
Remarkably, the 1978 cheerleading show drew 37% of the viewing audience, outperforming ABC's Monday Night Baseball, which only attracted 22%.
