This collection of video clips illustrates highlights of the 14-year history of the Penn State Full-Scale Schlieren System, an instrument that could image invisible phenomena on a scale unmatched by any other indoor system. Experiments are shown on commercial kitchen ventilation, natural-gas leak detection, fumes from gasoline and bug spray, the thermal plume of the human body, and finally a rifle shot and a small explosion in slow motion. As always happens in academia, there was intense competition for the space occupied by this instrument and it eventually had to give up the building it occupied in favor of an insectary.
