SKELTON'S MOSS: Unveiling My New OO9 Narrow Gauge Diorama | A Tribute to Settle-Carlisle's Navvy Camps
Today on The Railway Room, I'm proud to unveil an exclusive first look at Skelton's Moss, my brand-new OO9 narrow gauge diorama! Built for the PECO Rail 200 model railway competition, this project is a miniature homage to the monumental task of early main line construction. Inspired by the building of the Settle to Carlisle line and the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct in particular, this scene transports you to the rugged Yorkshire Dales during the Victorian railway boom.
THE STORY OF SKELTON'S MOSS:
The diorama is set on the marshy ground of Skelton's Moss, depicting part of a sprawling construction camp and shanty town built for the navvies (construction workers).
A narrow gauge tramway moves materials around the muddy site, featuring a small loco shed, a branch to the viaduct base, and a steep main line climbing toward nearby off-scene tunnel excavations and moorlands
.
A partly constructed viaduct pier is surrounded by detailed scaffolding, while the foundations for the next pier are just being dug, all using manual labour!
The collection of temporary buildings includes large stables for the horses, wooden huts and caravans where the navvies live, and there are also pigs and chickens kept on-site to provide food for the camp.
LAYOUT UPDATES & BEHIND THE SCENES:
For those wondering about the lack of regular layout updates recently—this is why! I've been pouring all my time into this competition build.
Look out for a future video where I dive into the construction techniques, the kits, and all the materials I used to create the detailed scenery and figures on this OO9 narrow gauge diorama.
