QUOTE REF INDIA: Sikh militants, taking control of the Golden Temple
SYND of Amritsar for the first time since the 1984 army assault on
5.2.86 the shrine, repudiated their five high priests and
LN117477 "excommunicated" India's Sikh President on 26/1/86. The
moves, seen as threatening another political crisis in the
Punjab, came during a rally by Sikh militants to begin
tearing down and rebuilding the Golden Temple shrine, the
Akal Takht, damaged when the army stormed the temple in June
1984. Some 20,000 Sikhs attended the rally.
