Paro airport in Bhutan presents two of the most challenging visual approaches in the world. The approach to runway 15 shown here involves a white-knuckle sequence of turns in steep mountain valleys concluding in an s-turn to final mere feet above rising terrain. There are apparently fewer than 10 pilots in the world who are certified to land airliners here.
Here's a description of the approach sequence, which is real fun to try in a sim:
1) From the TAKTI intersection, descend to 13,500 feet tracking direct to the Paro VOR (PRO)
2) From the PRO VOR, track R-328 northbound toward the airport, descending to the approach minimum of 12,500 ft passing D1.0 from PRO, and then descending to 11,500 feet when the airport is in sight. Disconnect the autopilot, autothrottle, turn off the flight directors, and hand-fly the rest of the sequence.
3) Passing the airfield below, turn left to follow the valley north of the airport, paralleling the ridge on the left side of the valley. Maintain 11,500 feet,. slow to approach speed, and put the aircraft in landing configuration.
4) As you approach the rising terrain looming ahead of you, make a descending right U-turn. Roll out when you have the monastery in view and track toward it. You want to be descending from 11,500 feet to about 9500 feet when you've finished your roll-out (about 2000ft/min in a B737 at 30 degrees of bank).
5) Now parallel the ridge on the other side of the valley, keeping the river below or slightly to your right, and tracking toward the monastery. Continue descending...
6) Here's where it gets real tricky with that low-altitude S-turn to final. This is pure stick-and-rudder flying, and you can't overstate the importance of being properly coordinated to ensure a smooth rollout on final
as you approach the edge of the ridge to your left, the runway will come in to your view on your right.
Ideally, as soon as you have the runway in sight, begin your S-turn. Your goal is to pass the ridge north of the runway (and the famous "Mr. Smith's house" on that ridge) at around 7700 feet.
-You are then eyeballing the final roll-out based on your altitude and speed to align yourself with the center-line.
(in a perfect world, you'd be lined up with the runway just as you overfly the stream north of the airport fence, but way too happy feet on the rudder pedals got me slightly off center-line on the roll-out from the turn - co-ordination, co-ordination, co-ordination)
