In 218 BC, Hannibal Barca led his Carthaginian army on a daring march through Gaul and over the Alps to invade Italy during the Second Punic War. After crossing taking Sagundum and advancing through hostile Iberian and Gallic territories, Hannibal secured alliances with some Celtic tribes while battling others. With an army of around 50,000 infantry, 9,000 cavalry, and several war elephants, he traversed the Rhone River and pushed into the Alps, facing harsh terrain, ambushes from mountain tribes, and extreme weather conditions. Despite losing nearly half his forces to the treacherous conditions and enemy skirmishes, Hannibal successfully descended into the Po Valley, where he reorganized his army and prepared for his legendary campaign against Rome.
'Through the Alpine Peaks' is the second of eleven songs that form the 'Hannibal Ante Portas' Rock Opera, the second historical rock opera project I have embarked on after the Alexander Rock Opera (356 - 323 BC) I finished in January 2025.
