When I was listening to a sermon from 1 Timothy:6-6-12, I felt like I needed a constant reminder of this truth. And so I started to set the ideas to music, as a way of quasi-memorization. I was especially into the phrase from Eugene Peterson's translation, "Run for your life". It brought a vitality to the passage that stuck with me.
Also, please forgive my poor chroma keying. And the fact that the accordion player doesn't get the words right.
Contentment – by Adam Browne
Based on 1 Timothy 6:5-19
Verse 1:
A faithful mask with worldly gain
A lust for things we can’t retain
Lord, give me what I cannot lose
Content in You
Verse 2:
No wealth nor pride, possessions, no.
That’s how I came, and how I’ll go.
Lord, be my all, my comfort too,
Content in You
Chorus 1:
Lord, help me run for my life
From every hollow delight
From any trap the world pulls me into
Set me a table to eat
And give me shoes on my feet
That I might run for my life back to you
Verse 3:
To persevere, with patient grace
For righteousness, for love and faith
Lord, let these be what I pursue
Content in You
Bridge:
I carry the weight of the world like a stone.
It’s all that I’m after and all that I own.
It’s holding me back and it’s pulling me down.
And my only escape is the grace that you’ve shown.
You set me apart and you called me your own.
And you say that I’m fearfully, wonderfully known.
And You paid for my sin, And you said “it is done!”
And You rose from the grave, and my life, it is won!
So I’m running a race, but I’m never alone.
And you give me the grace, and the faith to let go
Of the way of the world and the weight of stone
Of the sin that I do and the good that I don’t.
So I’m casting it off, and I’m holding to hope
In contentment today and the kingdom to come.
See, I wanted a house, but you gave me a home
With a song and a robe and view of the throne!
Chorus 2:
Lord, help me run for my life
From every hollow delight
From any trap the world pulls me into
Set me a table to eat
And give me shoes on my feet
And I will run for the life found in You
Optional Refrain (sing it like the verses):
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame.
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name
