Don and Hazel’s first day of a planned car road trip (2018) from Port Orange, FL to/through 26 states in 54 days, with photos and info. Mostly using Historic US Highway 90, our first stop was a quick trip to see Suwannee River State Park, then another quick stop for photos at Jim Woodruff Lock & Dam in Sneads, FL. We spent the night in DeFuniak Springs – definitely a sleepy little town. A walk around Lake DeFuniak is a walk back into Victorian times, when labor and materials were plentiful and elaborate architectural details were incorporated in the homes being built. Turrets, double verandas, classic fluted columns, gingerbread trim, and window dormers all resulted in interesting architecture. Most of the homes on Circle Drive are now on the National Register of Historic Places. I especially liked the "Nook and Cranny" store, Bogey’s Restaurant, Victorian homes, and an impressive magnolia tree! After a short, partial walk around Lake DeFuniak to see the beautiful houses and the Chipley Park on Circle Drive, we had dinner at McLain’s Family Steakhouse & Buffet – an interesting restaurant in DeFuniak Springs, with airplanes on ceiling (the Eglin Air Force Base is nearby). Our day ended with a beautiful sunset… and we enjoyed our King size room at the Regency Inn and Suites.
