1. Early Planning (1862–1906):

The British colonial government felt the need to connect Howrah railway station with Calcutta city.

Initially, a pontoon bridge (floating bridge) was built in 1874 but was unstable during monsoons and heavy traffic.



2. Modern Bridge Plan:

In the 1920s, it was decided to replace the pontoon bridge with a permanent structure.

Design chosen was a cantilever truss bridge (like the Forth Bridge in Scotland), which didn’t require piers in the river – this was ideal due to strong river currents.



3. World War II Delay:

Construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1942, but the bridge opened to public use in 1943 due to the war.

No nuts and bolts were used – it was riveted together.

26,500 tons of high-tensile steel used.
