Making Sheep Shear Knives: CHEAP & EASY!

Today in the shop I am reclaiming an old pair of rusty and pitted sheep shears that I recently picked up for a few dollars at a flea market. I am saving them from a life of becoming a wall ornament in someone's bathroom, and turning them into a pair of Petty knives.

I cut the shears apart, cleaned and de-rusted them, ground in the asymmetrical bevels, and then shaped and fit the wooden handles. I glues the handles to the external tang, and pinned them together for some additional strength with 1/8" brass pins. The wooden handle design is one that drew and edited several times before finding one that I liked, while adding to the aesthetic of the knife, pairing sharp facets with a smooth curved back.

I love the way these knives feel in the hand, and how well they work in the kitchen.
