Sir Thomas Malory’s Le Morte d'Arthur is the most famous medieval retelling of the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Written in the 15th century and first published in 1485 by William Caxton, Malory's work compiles and adapts earlier Arthurian romances from French and English sources into a unified narrative. It tells the story of Arthur’s rise to the throne, the formation of Camelot, the noble exploits of his knights—including Lancelot, Gawain, and Percival—and the tragic downfall of the kingdom.
Malory’s Le Morte d'Arthur explores themes of chivalry, loyalty, love, and betrayal, centering on major episodes such as Arthur’s miraculous birth, the quest for the Holy Grail, the love affair between Lancelot and Queen Guinevere, and Arthur’s final battle with Mordred at Camlann. The work ends with Arthur’s departure to Avalon, leaving open the possibility of his return. Malory’s version of the Arthurian legend became the definitive English account, inspiring countless later adaptations in literature, art, and popular culture, ensuring that the tales of Camelot and its legendary knights endure to this day.
