This peshwa played a key role in dethroning Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiyar in 1719. Vishwanath supported the Sayyid brothers, who had plotted against Farrukhsiyar after he refused to ratify a treaty. With the help of Maratha troops, the Sayyid brothers and Balaji Vishwanath marched to Delhi, defeated Farrukhsiyar's forces, dethroned him, and installed a puppet emperor in his place.
