Projection Augmented Relief Model (PARM) of Skipton – flood risk communication research

In collaboration with Dr Gary Priestnall from the University of Nottingham, we have created a Projection Augmented Relief Model (PARM) of Skipton, North Yorkshire. We are carrying out research to see how 3D digital models help people to understand spatial information and whether they are a useful way to share information about flood risk and resilience.

PARMs can be used for local community engagement, to support decision making and for educational activities. They show the causes and impacts of flooding, for example areas likely to flood, the benefit of flood alleviation schemes and the impacts of climate change on future flood risk. Images are projected on to the 3D printed scale model to help visualise landmarks, rivers, buildings, terrain and land use. A display screen helps interpret what is being shown on the model, for example photographs of landmarks or flooding events.
