A short film about Erving Goffman's (1961) Asylums. It explores the experience of patients and inmates living inside of total institutions such as psychiatric hospitals, prisons, care homes, military barracks and religious convents. The film covers concepts such as the 'mortification of the self', 'the moral career of the mental patient', the experience and conflicts arising for staff, and the dynamic nature of the self.

I've been asked a couple of times recently about ways to donate to the channel. I do not expect anyone to do this. However, I won't decline it, either. If you wish to donate to STOF, please feel free to 'buy me a coffee' at buymeacoffee.com/socialtheoryonfilm
